WHAT IS CATARACT SURGERY?
Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of the eye and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens. Your lens is made mostly of water and proteins. As a cataract forms, the protein naturally start to break down, causing the lens to become cloudy and yellow when its typically clear. This prevents light from properly passing through your lens. As a result, you develop symptoms like blurry vision, halos around bright lights, or double vision. Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. However, certain medical conditions and medications, injures, and previous eye surgeries can also cause cataracts.
Cataract surgery is performed by an eye doctor, also called an ophthalmologist. It's performed on an outpatient basis, which means you don't have to stay in the hospital after the surgery. Cataract surgery is very common and is generally a safe procedure. You will receive a new intraocular lens that also corrects nearsightedness and farsightedness.
WHO NEEDS CATARACT SURGERY?
You may need surgery if cataracts in one or both eyes are causing vision problems interfering with your usual activities. Your eye care specialist may also recommend cataract surgery if they need to see the back of your eye to manage other eye conditions like:
Age-related macular degeneration
Diabetes-related retinopathy
It is important to know that cataract surgery won’t treat vision loss from these other conditions. It only improves vision loss due to cataracts.
